Cardiovascular and Pulmonary – Physical therapy is useful before and after cardiac/pulmonary surgeries.

  • Geriatric – Physical therapy for older adults who are dealing with chronic health conditions like arthritis, cancer, dementia, osteoporosis, etc.
  • Integumentary – Physical therapy for the skin, such as burn and wound management.
  • Neurological – Physical therapy that helps with neurological disorders like dementia, stroke, and traumatic brain injuries.
  • Orthopedic – Physical therapy that aids in the recovery of broken bones, sprains, muscle strains/tears, and other injuries to the muscles, joints, and bones.

Physical Therapy Can Reduce Healthcare Costs

If your parent follows through with the physical therapy exercises and appointments, physical therapy can reduce healthcare costs. The exercises can help strengthen joints and muscles, which can help with balance and fall prevention.

The Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy released some interesting findings in 2018. Half of all patients who sought physical therapy for pain in the back and neck saw a 50 percent reduction in their pain within a year. They didn’t need expensive surgeries.

Physical Therapy Was a Woman’s Profession

Physical therapists got their start in a rather surprising way. The career was mainly held by women who aided soldiers and children stricken by polio in the 1910s. When Mary McMillan, one of the charter members, became president of the American Women’s Physical Therapeutic Association, it was only 1921. It would be another year before the organization would allow men to join.

By the 1930s, there were almost 1,000 members. The polio epidemic led to increased demand for physical therapists, so the organization dropped the word “women’s” and continued to expand. By the 1960s, membership reached close to 15,000 members. It’s continued to grow over the decades. Currently, there are more than 95,000 members of the American Physical Therapy Association.
