4 Tips for Helping a Senior Avoid Social Isolation

Senior Care in Windsor CA

With all of the changes that come with aging, it can take a bit of getting used to for an elderly parent and their family. The things that people were able to do when they were young often requires aSenior-Care-Windsor-CA lot more effort for them to do now. Among the first things that will change is the amount of socialization an elderly person gets on a day-to-day basis.  However, there are ways around this.  By following the tips here, adult children can help keep their aging parents from isolating.

1.  Provide transportation

Among the biggest problems obstacles that elderly people will have to overcome when trying to stay social is their inability to drive. There will come a time when seniors are unable to drive due to diminished vision or other health factors. In order to get where they need to go – doctor’s appointments, clothes shopping, the market – seniors will need to rely on their adult children or elderly care provider. Adult children will need to either provide the transportation for their elderly parent or find a senior care provider who can do this for them.

2.  Find a purpose for the senior

Helping seniors find a hobby or activity that they can invest time into is a great way to fight social isolation. Adult children will need to talk with their parent to figure out what they are passionate about to help the senior get started. In some cases, finding the right hobbies for a senior may take a bit of trial and error to figure out.

3.  Something to care for

When trying to keep seniors from succumbing to social isolation, an adult child will also need to think about getting them a pet. This will give seniors companionship and will allow them to care from something, which can do wonders for a senior’s outlook on life. Make sure to take into consideration the type of dog or cat to get for the senior. When it comes to dogs, choose a less energetic breed that is easy to train.

4.  Make use of technology

Brining technology into their life can be a great way to motivate them to socialize more. Taking the time to set up a Facebook or Twitter account for a senior can open up a whole new world of socialization prospects. Allowing them to connect with friends and family on these networks will keep in them informed with posts and pictures of their loved ones.
